The only problem with starting with 3 is that it makes 1 and 2 feel sluggish and outdated by comparison. Honestly I would say start with DMC 3 because it's (imo) the best-though the difficulty is brutal and can turn some people off from it.

Get the DMC HD collection for either PS3 or 360 and start with those. It would serve as a reasonable introduction as it is a prequel to the original Devil May Cry, whereas Devil May Cry 4 has the most fleshed out combat but could be difficult to dive into head-first. If you really don't have the time, Devil May Cry 3 is the overall favorite and has the most compelling story. If you have the time, I'd definitely advocate playing in order since you can find most of these games at reasonable prices.

Most say you can skip DMC 2 as it is the black sheep of the series and has little connection to the rest, but I'd say it's worth playing through just once, even if only to see why people feel that way.Īlternatively, you could start with the reboot since it has a more beginner-friendly control scheme, but the first game could feel dated by comparison if you head straight into the original series afterward. That is if you want the complete experience and you are willing to go through the series' history. In 2005, Devil May Cry 3 introduced new fighting styles and told a prequel story involving Dante and his rival brother Vergil.
The second game followed on in 2003 with the introduction of Lucia and an enhanced demon form. Released in October of 2001, Devil May Cry introduced protagonist Dante and established the series' mixture of gunplay and swordplay. Beyond a high-definition visual retooling, Capcom has said the new package will include unspecified bonus content and support for trophies on the PS3 and achievements on the Xbox 360.
Set for North American release early next year, the HD Collection will represent the original PlayStation 2 trilogy with Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition.
